When to Go

Kaesong has a continental climate with cold, dry winters and warm, humid summers. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best times to visit: temperatures are comfortable, the light is good, and the countryside around the city is at its most attractive — green in spring, golden in autumn. The Tomb of King Kongmin is particularly pleasant in autumn.

Summer (July–August) brings heavy rainfall and high humidity. Winter is cold — temperatures regularly drop below freezing — but the city looks striking under snow, and tour groups are thinner on the ground.

Visit timing is largely determined by your North Korea tour operator rather than your own preference; most operators run Kaesong day trips year-round, with peak season in spring and autumn matching overall North Korea travel patterns.
