The bulk of North Korea's maritime trade enters and leaves through the Nampo port complex, including a large dry-dock shipyard that builds cargo and fishing vessels and undertakes occasional naval work. The harbour stretches for several kilometres along the south bank of the Taedong, and a slow drive past it gives a rare glimpse of what a working North Korean industrial site looks like.
Photography is discouraged in some areas; ask the guide before raising a camera. Most foreigners see the port only from the road or from the bridge connecting the city to Waudo District. There is no formal visitor access.
