Getting There

Wonsan is reachable from Pyongyang by road (approximately three hours on a tour bus) or by Air Koryo domestic flight from Sunan International Airport. The road journey passes through North Korean countryside — farmland, villages, and occasional factories — and is of interest in itself. All travel in North Korea must be arranged through a government-approved tour operator; independent travel is not possible.

Wonsan has its own airport (Kalma Airport), upgraded as part of the Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone development. As of 2025, it primarily handles domestic flights and charter flights from Russia. Whether it will open to regular international routes depends on North Korean policy decisions.
