Barka Fort

Barka Fort stands close to the waterfront and is one of the best-preserved coastal forts on Oman's Batinah plain. Unlike many Omani fortifications set back from the coast, Barka's fort sits near the sea, which gives it a particularly photogenic setting — the combination of whitewashed towers, date palms, and the glittering Gulf of Oman behind it makes for memorable images.

The fort has been restored and serves as a small museum. The rooms are furnished to show how they were used in earlier centuries, and the views from the towers across the coastal plain and out to the water are excellent. The site is generally quiet — far fewer visitors than Nizwa or Bahla — which makes for a more relaxed visit. Open most days; entry is inexpensive.

A story
Barka Fort was the birthplace of Hamad bin Said Al Busaidi, the founder of the Busaidi dynasty that still rules Oman today. In the late eighteenth century, Hamad expelled the Yaruba dynasty and established what became the Al Said sultans. The fort that was his home base is now a museum — but its walls contain the origin story of modern Oman.
