Sur's food scene is dominated by South Asian cooking — the Indian and Bangladeshi-run restaurants near the market are the most reliable for a cheap, filling meal. Curries, biryanis, and grills are the staples. A few Omani-run restaurants serve local dishes including shuwa (slow-cooked spiced meat) and machboos (spiced rice with fish or meat). Seafood is predictably good given Sur's coastal location: grilled hammour (grouper) and fresh fish from the morning boats are available at several spots near the waterfront.
Prices are low compared with Muscat. For a sit-down meal with drinks, expect to pay the equivalent of a few dollars. The market area has the best concentration of cheap eating.
