Poonch Hills Walking

The hills surrounding Hajira are covered in pine and deodar cedar forest, and walking into them is one of the best reasons to stop here rather than simply passing through. There are no marked trails, but the terrain is not difficult, and the forest opens up regularly to give views across the valleys toward the Line of Control and the mountains of Indian-administered Kashmir beyond.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons: the forest floor in spring is green and wildflowers dot the clearings, while autumn brings cooler temperatures and clearer skies. Summer is also pleasant at this elevation — the heat that makes the Punjab plains oppressive rarely reaches this high. Come winter, snow can close the higher tracks and the roads become uncertain. Local people walk these hills regularly for firewood and farming; you will rarely be entirely alone, and asking in the bazaar for directions to a particular ridge or viewpoint is usually productive.
