Khari Sharif Shrine

The shrine complex at Khari Sharif, a short drive from central Mirpur, holds the tombs of two significant figures: Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, the 19th-century Punjabi poet and Sufi who wrote the romantic epic Saif-ul-Mulook, and his teacher Pir-e-Shah Ghazi. The shrine is an active pilgrimage site visited by devotees from across Azad Kashmir and Pakistani Punjab, particularly on the anniversary of the poet's death.

Saif-ul-Mulook tells the story of a prince's love for a fairy princess — a mystical allegory in the Punjabi Sufi tradition — and has never been out of print or out of favour in this region since Bakhsh composed it in the 1850s. The shrine is working religious site, not a museum; dress modestly and ask permission before photographing.
