The University of Poonch is a small public university on a wooded campus a couple of kilometres from the centre of Rawalakot. The grounds are open to walk and the campus has some of the best mature pine cover near the town — pleasant for an hour's stroll on a hot day.
The university is the largest single employer in the valley and a centre of the area's intellectual life. The annual Kashmir literary festival is sometimes held here.
