Sulphur Hot Springs

The hot springs are the only reason most visitors come to Tatta Pani. Sulphur-rich water bubbles up from a number of natural vents in the cliff face above the Poonch river, flowing down through a series of basic stone-walled pools at progressively lower temperatures. The smell of hydrogen sulphide is unmistakable from a distance.

Two separate bathing areas serve men and women. Facilities are very basic: changing booths, a few towel racks, no real signage. Best in winter, when the cold air above the river makes the soak genuinely welcome — in the summer months the bathing experience is less appealing. A small entrance fee is collected by the local panchayat.

A story
The springs are believed locally to ease arthritis, rheumatism and skin conditions — claims also made for hot sulphur springs in many other parts of the world. The water emerges from the cliff face above the river at temperatures around 60°C, hot enough to cook an egg in three minutes; villagers traditionally use shallow cool-down pools cut into the rock terraces.
