Fareed Gate (Farid Gate)

One of the historic gates into Bahawalpur's old walled city

Fareed Gate is one of the historic entry points into Bahawalpur's old walled city, standing near the heart of the commercial district. The gate itself is a substantial arched structure, and the streets around it retain the dense, layered character of a functioning South Asian bazaar — textile traders, halwa sellers, jewellers, and spice merchants operating in buildings that have seen continuous use for generations.

It is the best place to begin a walking exploration of the old city. The labyrinthine alleys around the gate lead to the Shahi Bazaar, the central library, and the older neighbourhoods where the decorated facades of merchant houses can still be found.

A story
The gate is named after the Sufi saint Khwaja Ghulam Farid, one of the most venerated figures in the Seraiki cultural region. The old bazaar inside Fareed Gate is where the city's traditional craft economy still operates — particularly the makers of embroidered Cholistani textiles and the sellers of sohn halwa, the dense nut-and-honey sweet that Bahawalpur is famous for.
