Roughly four kilometres up the mountain north-west of Chitral, on a ridge above the airport, sit the ruins of Birmoghlasht — the summer residence of the Mehtars built around 1810. The kings retreated here in the hot months to enjoy cooler air and views down the valley.
The fort itself is now a shell, but the climb is the real attraction: a half-day walk on a rough jeep road through orchards and grazing land, with Tirich Mir rising behind you. A 4x4 can take you most of the way, but doing it on foot is the better experience.
