The Shahi Mosque, finished in 1924, stands between the bazaar and the fort. Painted brilliant white with three onion domes and slender minarets, it was commissioned by Mehtar Shuja-ul-Mulk and remains the most prominent piece of architecture in central Chitral. The interior is open to visitors outside prayer times; dress modestly and remove shoes.
The mosque is the easiest landmark to use for orientation in town — the bazaar lanes run east from its gates, and the fort entrance is a two-minute walk to the south.
