Borith Lake

Borith Lake is a saline lake sitting at around 2,500 metres elevation, approximately two kilometres north of Ghulkin village. The lake occupies a shallow depression dammed by glacial moraine, and its milky turquoise colour comes from glacial rock flour suspended in the water. It is one of the better bird-watching spots in upper Hunza, particularly between March and June when migratory wildfowl — ducks, geese, and waders — stop here on passage from the Indus plains.

The lake can be reached in under an hour from Ghulkin on foot, following a track through the fields and then climbing slightly to the lakeside. A longer approach from the Karakoram Highway through Husseini village offers an alternative route. In good weather, the reflected peaks of the surrounding Karakoram make the lake an obvious place to stop and sit awhile. Combined with a visit to the Ghulkin Glacier, Borith makes a satisfying half-day circuit from the village.
