Ghulkin Village

Ghulkin village itself is worth exploring slowly on foot. The circular layout of the traditional stone and mud-brick houses — built facing inward toward what was once the lakebed — is unusual among Karakoram villages, where most settlements are strung along a single road or terrace. Walking the perimeter gives a sense of the original logic: every house faces the common ground at the centre, now used for cricket and community gatherings.

The Jammatkhana — the Ismaili community hall — stands at the centre of the village and is the focal point of life here. Visitors who are respectful and unhurried will often find that someone invites them in for tea. The apricot orchards that surround the village in summer are productive enough that locals dry the fruit on their rooftops; in August the terraces are orange with drying apricots, and you can usually buy a bag from a family at the roadside.
