Site Museum

On-site museum displaying finds from the excavations including the famous Dancing Girl

The small museum at the site displays finds from over a century of excavation at Moenjodaro. The highlights are the seals — hundreds of small square steatite stamps engraved with animals and a script that has never been deciphered — and replicas of the most famous objects found here, including the bronze Dancing Girl (now in New Delhi's National Museum) and the stone Priest-King bust (also in Karachi's National Museum of Pakistan).

The originals were removed to India before partition and have not been returned; what the site museum displays are replicas, but informative ones. The interpretive panels provide a good overview of the chronology and the ongoing controversies about the Indus Valley Civilization: who they were, what language they spoke, and why a city of 40,000 people was abandoned around 1900 BC.
