Patriata (New Murree)

Patriata, about 8 kilometres south of Murree, is the site of Pakistan's most popular chairlift and a popular day-trip extension from the main town. The chairlift runs from the base station up to a ridge at around 2,100 metres, with views over the forested valleys of the Pir Panjal foothills. A cable car also connects the two sections. The summit plateau has a small amusement area with rides, food stalls, and vendors selling Kashmiri shawls.

The ride up gives better views than most of what you can see from Murree's own ridge, and the forest cover is denser here. Patriata is busy on weekends and public holidays; arrive early to avoid long queues for the chairlift. The area gets snow earlier than Murree proper and sometimes stays white later in spring.

A story
Patriata was developed in the 1960s as an extension to Murree, marketed as "New Murree," with a chairlift and cable car system connecting the valley to the ridge. The development was part of a government effort to spread tourism pressure from the overcrowded Murree ridge. The cable car system remains one of the few of its kind in Pakistan and is a significant draw for families from the plains.
