Mahodand Lake is the upper Swat's headline destination — a long blue mountain lake set in a U-shaped valley above the Ushu Forest, with snow on the peaks at the head of the valley well into summer. It sits about 35 km north of Kalam at the end of a rough jeep road that takes 2–3 hours one way; 4x4 is essential.
The lake is a popular day trip from Kalam, but staying overnight in one of the basic riverside cabins above the lake gives the place a different quality — quiet, cold, and astonishingly starry. Trekkers can continue up the valley from here toward Kandol Lake and the Hindu Raj peaks. Bring layers: even in July it is cold after sundown.
