Muqata'a (Arafat Mausoleum)

The Muqata'a is the compound that served as Yasser Arafat's headquarters during the Second Intifada, when Israeli forces besieged it and confined him inside from 2001 until his evacuation for medical treatment in 2004. He is buried here in a simple white marble tomb in an open courtyard, and the site has become the main visitor attraction in Ramallah.

A museum adjacent to the mausoleum tells the story of Palestinian national identity from the early 20th century to the present, with particular focus on Arafat's life and leadership. Exhibits include documents, photographs, and personal effects. Entry is free. The compound is also the current seat of the Palestinian Authority's presidency and is surrounded by government buildings; parts of the complex remain restricted, but the mausoleum and museum are open to visitors.

A story
Yasser Arafat died in a Paris hospital in November 2004 under disputed circumstances. The French military hospital where he died refused to release his full medical records, fuelling decades of speculation about the cause of death. In 2012, Swiss scientists found elevated levels of polonium-210 on his personal effects; his body was subsequently exhumed for further testing, though the results were inconclusive. The question of whether he was poisoned remains officially unanswered.
