Morong Beach

Morong is the calmest beach on Batan, facing west and sheltered from the worst of the Pacific swells that pound the island's east coast. The sand is dark grey-brown — volcanic, like everything else in Batanes — and the water is clear enough to swim in during the March-to-May season when the sea settles down. It is not a tropical postcard beach, but it is a genuinely peaceful place to sit for an hour.

The beach is best reached by scooter from Basco, heading south along the west coast road. It takes about twenty minutes. You are unlikely to find many other people here on a weekday. The sunsets from Morong are excellent — the sky over the South China Sea turns remarkable colours in the dry season, and there is nothing between you and the horizon.
