Vayang Rolling Hills

The rolling green hills on Batan's west coast are the image that most people carry away from Batanes. The land folds and rises in long, smooth swells above the South China Sea, with almost no trees — just open grassland, the occasional stone house, and cattle grazing on the slopes. On a clear morning, with clouds moving fast overhead and the sea glittering below, it is one of the finest views in the Philippines.

You can reach Vayang on a scooter or by tricycle from Basco in about twenty minutes. There is no formal entrance or infrastructure — you park, you walk, you look. The ground is uneven and can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with some grip. Go in the morning when the light is best and the heat has not yet built up.

A story
The landscape of Batan's west coast looks nothing like the rest of the Philippines — it has more in common with the Scottish Highlands or the Irish coast than with the tropical lowlands to the south. The resemblance is not coincidental: the same Atlantic-style winds and typhoon rains that batter Batanes for months each year keep the hills green, treeless, and cropped short by grazing cattle and goats.
