The Balangay Shrine Museum (5 km from the city centre) is Butuan’s most important cultural site — it preserves excavated plank-built boats dating to around 320 CE, among the oldest in Southeast Asia, along with burial grounds and artefacts from the ancient trading centre. The National Museum in the city has gold artefacts from local excavations. Butuan Bay has around 19 dive sites with good visibility. Mount Mayapay, less than an hour from the city centre, has trails through forest to springs and waterfalls.
