Marcelo Fernan Bridge

The Marcelo Fernan Bridge — informally the Second Bridge — is the newer of the two crossings between Mandaue and Mactan Island. An extradosed cable-stayed structure opened in 1999, it carries six lanes of traffic and is especially striking when lit at night, when the cables and towers are illuminated and visible from the Mandaue waterfront. Together with the older Mactan-Mandaue Bridge a short distance south, it is one of the defining landmarks of the Metro Cebu skyline.

The bridge connects Barangay Cambaro in Mandaue to Barangay Pusok in Lapu-Lapu City, providing an essential second link to Mactan Island (home of Mactan-Cebu International Airport). Viewing the bridge from the Mandaue shore is pleasant in the early evening, when boat traffic on the Mactan Channel picks up and the coastal strip becomes a popular promenade.

A story
The bridge is named after Marcelo Fernan, a former Chief Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court who was a native of Cebu. When it opened in 1999, it was the first extradosed cable-stayed bridge in Southeast Asia — a design in which the cables are kept short and nearly parallel to the deck, creating a lower, more elegant silhouette than a conventional cable-stay. At the time it was built, only a handful of such bridges existed anywhere in the world.
