The oldest American-founded university in the Philippines (established 1901), with a leafy campus in the centre of Dumaguete. The campus is open to visitors and is a pleasant place to walk; the anthropology museum displays artefacts from the indigenous peoples of Negros and the surrounding islands. The university gives the city much of its character and accounts for its unusually large population of students and academics.
