Dumaguete is known as the "City of Gentle People" and is the main base for diving and snorkelling around Apo Island, one of the Philippines' most celebrated marine reserves. The city itself is pleasant and walkable, with Silliman University's campus and the seafront Boulevard as its social centres. Day trips to the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes and the waterfalls in Valencia are easy from town.
