Iloilo River Esplanade

The Iloilo River Esplanade runs along the west bank of the Iloilo River through the city centre, connecting the old commercial district to the newer developments further south. The riverside walkway is shaded by trees, lined with benches and food stalls, and busy in the early mornings and evenings with walkers, joggers, and people fishing from the bank. The Forbes Bridge, a heritage-listed iron arch bridge from the early 20th century, crosses the river nearby and is a good landmark.

The esplanade is at its best in the early evening, when the light softens and the riverside restaurants and cafes fill with locals. A number of small bangka (outrigger boat) operators offer short river trips from the esplanade for a few pesos — a pleasant way to see the city from the water and to spot the egrets and kingfishers that have returned to the cleaned-up river. The walk from the old commercial centre at the northern end to the Smallville entertainment complex at the south takes about 45 minutes.

A story
The Iloilo River esplanade was built in stages from the early 2000s onward as part of a city cleanup effort that transformed a heavily polluted urban waterway into an attractive public space. The project required relocating informal settlements from the riverbanks and installing flood control infrastructure — a complex undertaking that took over a decade but resulted in one of the better riverside promenades in the Philippine provinces.
