The rice terraces of Kalinga are less famous than those at Banaue — they are not UNESCO-listed and they receive a fraction of the visitors. They are also some of the oldest stone-walled terraces in the Cordillera, and the villages around Sumadel, Tinglayan, and Lubuagan still work them by hand using methods almost unchanged from the eighteenth century.
The walking is more demanding than at Banaue (steeper, longer between villages, fewer signed trails) and you will want a local guide. The best season is around the rice harvest in October and November, when the slopes are gold. The flooding and replanting period in February and March gives the famous reflective-mirror effect.
