Makati's position at the centre of Metro Manila makes it a practical base for day trips across the capital region and beyond. The MRT and Grab put most of the metro within reach in under an hour outside rush hours.
Intramuros, the old walled city of Manila, is about 30 minutes by Grab and offers the most concentrated dose of Spanish colonial history in the country. The Fort Santiago citadel and the San Agustin Church — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are the main draws. Nearby Rizal Park is large enough to walk off a leisurely morning.
Tagaytay, on the ridge overlooking Taal Volcano and its crater lake, is the classic half-day escape from Manila. The drive south on the SLEX expressway takes around 90 minutes to two hours depending on traffic, and the air is noticeably cooler than the city. Several restaurants along the ridge serve the local specialty, bulalo (bone marrow soup), with panoramic views of the lake.
Las Pinas is home to the famous Bamboo Organ inside Saint Joseph Parish Church, the only bamboo-pipe organ in the world. The church is a short taxi ride from the SLEX, and the organ is played during Sunday masses. Combine it with a visit to the nearby Sarao Jeepney factory to see how Manila's iconic vehicles are built.
Corregidor Island, the fortified island at the mouth of Manila Bay that saw heavy fighting in 1942, can be reached by ferry from the CCP Complex in Pasay. The round trip takes most of a day and includes guided tours of the war memorials, tunnels, and ruined barracks.
