Aga Khan Museum of Islamic Arts

The leading museum of Maranao and Mindanao Islamic art, at MSU

Address Mindanao State University main campus

The Aga Khan Museum of Islamic Arts, on the Mindanao State University campus, holds the most significant collection of Maranao material culture anywhere — brassware (gador containers, betel boxes, the famous tobacco trays), heavily-decorated kulintang gong sets, malong textiles, wooden architectural fragments salvaged from old torogan royal houses, and ceremonial weaponry. There is also an archaeological section covering pre-Islamic Mindanao.

The museum is small (a couple of rooms) but the collection is the real thing rather than a tourist display — university curators have built it from family donations since the 1960s. Modest admission. The campus is the safest part of the city for foreign visitors and the museum is the single most worthwhile stop in Marawi.
