Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the seat of the Archdiocese of Ozamis and one of the most architecturally distinguished religious buildings in northern Mindanao. The current structure was designed by Leandro Locsin, the National Artist for Architecture best known for his Brutalist masterworks in Manila, and it shows the same boldness and spatial confidence that characterises his other commissions.

The cathedral also houses the only pipe organ in Mindanao, which lends it a musical prestige unusual for a provincial city. Masses draw significant congregations from across the archdiocese, and the building functions as the spiritual heart of the wider region. Inside, the proportions are generous and the light is handled thoughtfully — worth a visit even if you are not there for a service.

The cathedral is dedicated jointly to the Immaculate Conception and the Blessed Virgin of the Fort, a co-patronage that links it directly to the nearby Fuerte de la Concepción, making both sites a natural pairing for an afternoon visit.

A story
The 1955 earthquake that levelled much of Ozamiz destroyed the earlier church on this site. The archdiocese commissioned National Artist Leandro Locsin — the same architect behind the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila — to design the replacement. Locsin's trademark floating mass aesthetic, rare to see outside Manila, makes this cathedral one of the more architecturally significant buildings in all of Mindanao.
