Sogod Bay

Sogod Bay stretches along the western coast of Southern Leyte. While its name is not prominent in the Philippine tourist literature, the bay has excellent marine biodiversity — healthy coral reefs, diverse fish life, and occasional whale shark sightings make it a worthwhile diving and snorkelling destination for those who get this far south.

The bay can be accessed from several points near Sogod town, though organised diving infrastructure is minimal. A boat can be arranged in the town for those with their own equipment. The water visibility is generally good in the dry season. The bay is sheltered from the open Pacific by the shape of Southern Leyte and is calmer than the exposed eastern coast. For those who want to dive or snorkel without the crowds of more famous Philippine dive destinations, this is a reasonable alternative.

A story
Sogod Bay is one of the best whale shark aggregation sites in the Philippines — a fact largely unknown outside diving circles, which is precisely what makes it interesting. The whale sharks that gather at Donsol in Sorsogon are famous; those in Southern Leyte's waters are not, and you are unlikely to share the experience with crowds.
