The hike to Mount Pinatubo's crater lake is arguably the best day trek in the Philippines. The trail starts from the village of Santa Juliana in Capas, Tarlac — just east of Zambales province — and follows a 4WD jeep track through a vast lahar plain, a grey-white moonscape of volcanic deposits that still stretches across the landscape more than three decades after the 1991 eruption. The lahar field is disorienting in its scale: you are walking through material that once buried entire towns.
The lake itself — Lake Pinatubo — sits at the summit in the collapsed caldera, its water a vivid turquoise-green that changes colour slightly depending on the light. The hike takes 2–3 hours each way on foot from the jump-off point, or about 45 minutes by 4WD jeep to the trailhead and then an hour on foot to the crater rim. The trek requires a permit and a registered guide arranged through the Capas Eco-Tourism Office. The recommended months are November through May — the trail is dangerous and sometimes closed during typhoon season.
