Metro
The Doha Metro opened in 2019 and is the most useful way to get around central Doha. Three lines serve 37 stations across a 76 km network. The Red Line runs north-south from the airport through the city center to Al Wakra. The Gold Line connects Ras Bu Abboud to Al Aziziyah. The Green Line runs east-west. A fourth Blue Line is under construction.
Trains run from around 05:00 to 01:00 most days. The fare is low — a day cap of QAR 6 covers unlimited travel. Tickets are purchased at station kiosks or loaded onto a Qcard. The trains are fast, air-conditioned, and run on time. For getting between the airport, the city center, Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art, and the Pearl, the Metro covers most tourist destinations.
A feeder bus network (Metrolink) extends the Metro's reach to areas like The Pearl-Qatar and Lusail Marina.
Taxi and ride-hailing
Karwa is the official taxi company. Metered taxis are available at the airport and major hotels. Uber and Careem both operate in Doha and are often the most convenient option — prices are reasonable by Western standards.
Bus
Public buses cover much of the city and connect Doha to some outlying towns. Fares are inexpensive at QAR 2–7. Buses are air-conditioned but routes are not always easy to navigate, and frequency outside the city center is limited.
Driving
Renting a car makes sense if you want to visit sites outside Doha — Zubarah, the Inland Sea, or the northern coast. All major international rental companies operate at Hamad Airport. You can drive on your home country licence for up to a week; after that you need a Qatari licence or an International Driving Permit.
Qatar's roads are generally in good condition. The highway network has been substantially expanded since 2018. That said, driving culture is aggressive — high speeds, frequent lane changes, and roundabouts treated as optional are common. Road fatality rates are among the highest in the world. Take extra care at intersections.
Zero tolerance for drink-driving applies absolutely. Any alcohol in your blood is a court offence, regardless of level.
For visiting the Inland Sea (Khor Al Udeid) in the south, a 4WD is essential — the final stretch is on open sand dunes.
