Al Rahmah Mosque

White marble mosque that appears to float on the Red Sea

A small white mosque built out over the Red Sea on a low platform, perhaps the most photographed building in Jeddah. The architecture is modern but follows traditional Hijazi forms — a turquoise dome, a single minaret, lattice screens — and the location on a curve of the Corniche means the building catches the light off the water from every angle.

Non-Muslims can admire the building from outside but cannot enter. Dress modestly if approaching. Free; combine with a walk along the northern Corniche.

A story
The mosque was built in 1985 on stilts driven into the sea bed. At high tide the supports disappear and the building looks completely afloat — an illusion that gave it its English nickname, the Floating Mosque. Best viewed at high tide an hour before sunset, when the light flattens the stilts out.
