Souk Al-Alawi

Centuries-old market street running through Al Balad

The principal souk of old Jeddah, running roughly north-south through Al Balad. Pilgrim traders have shopped here for centuries — spices, perfumes, prayer beads, frankincense, gold, fabric, dates, and the carpets and incense burners associated with hajj.

Sundown through late evening is the time to go: lights on, prayers calling, the alleys packed. Bargain hard. Cash only at most stalls; small bills help.
