Practical Information

Money

The currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR), pegged to the US dollar at roughly 3.75 SAR to 1 USD. ATMs are widely available in cities and accept international cards. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. Cash is useful for markets, taxis, and smaller establishments.

Dress Code

The official guidance is that clothing should be "decent and respectful." In practice this means covering shoulders and knees in public — loose trousers, long skirts, and shirts with sleeves are fine. Women are no longer required to wear an abaya by law (this changed in 2018), though many local women still do. In conservative areas and when visiting mosques, more modest covering is appropriate. Swimwear is fine at hotel pools and designated beaches.

Alcohol

Alcohol is prohibited throughout the country. There are no exceptions for tourists in public spaces.

Ramadan

During Ramadan — which shifts roughly 11 days earlier each year — eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is expected to be avoided by everyone, including non-Muslim visitors. Many restaurants open only after sunset. Business hours shorten. The evenings become festive, with families eating out late into the night.

Photography

Ask before photographing people, especially women. Avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, and checkpoints.

Safety

Saudi Arabia is generally very safe for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare. The main practical concerns are traffic (driving is fast and can be erratic) and the summer heat, which is genuinely dangerous in exposed areas.

Health

No vaccinations are specifically required for most nationalities. Tap water in cities is technically safe but most people drink bottled water. The summer heat (June–August) can reach 45°C or higher inland — take it seriously. Carry water, cover up, and avoid the midday sun.

Communications

The country code is +966. SIM cards with data are cheaply available at airports and phone shops — bring your passport. The main operators are STC, Zain, and Mobily. Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and cafes.

Electricity

Saudi Arabia uses 220V/60Hz with Type G plugs (same as the UK).

Time Zone

Saudi Arabia Standard Time is UTC+3, year-round (no daylight saving).
