Boulevard Riyadh City

A large outdoor entertainment and dining complex in the northern part of Riyadh, one of several "boulevard" developments built under Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 to create public spaces for leisure and entertainment. The complex has restaurants, cafes, retail, and event spaces, and hosts concerts, sports events, and cultural performances — all of which would have been inconceivable a decade ago.

Boulevard Riyadh gives a clear sense of how rapidly Saudi public life is changing. On weekend evenings it fills with families, young Saudis, and tourists, with live music and street performers that would not have been permitted before 2017. The food and retail mix caters primarily to a young Saudi audience rather than international tourists, but the atmosphere is lively and welcoming.

A story
Boulevard Riyadh City opened in 2019 as the first major entertainment district in Saudi Arabia following the lifting of the ban on public entertainment that had been in place since the 1980s. The government had banned cinemas, concerts, and most forms of public amusement as part of the social conservatism of the post-1979 era. The reopening of the entertainment sector, announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, happened faster than almost anyone expected.
