Jeongbang Waterfall

Waterfall that falls directly into the sea — one of East Asia's few coastal falls

Jeongbang is one of only a handful of waterfalls in East Asia that fall directly into the ocean. The 23-metre drop over black basalt onto the rocks and sea below is dramatic, and the viewing platform at the base (reached by descending stairs from a park above) puts you close to the spray. It sits just east of Seogwipo city on the south coast.

The waterfall is at its most powerful after rainfall; in dry periods the flow reduces significantly. Combine it with nearby Cheonjiyeon Waterfall (also in Seogwipo) and the Olle Trail section between the two for a good coastal walking half-day. Entry fee is small.

A story
According to Jeju legend, the Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang sent an envoy to Jeju to find the elixir of immortality. The envoy, Seo Bul, carved his name into the rock face near the waterfall before sailing further east. A cliff inscription claimed to be his still exists nearby — though whether it's genuine is debated.
