Magoksa is a major Buddhist temple in the hills north-west of Gongju, founded according to tradition in the 7th century. It is one of the mountain monasteries included in Korea's Sansa UNESCO World Heritage listing, and its appeal is as much about the wooded valley setting as the temple buildings.
It takes more effort than the central Baekje sights, so it is best for travellers spending a full day or night in Gongju. In spring and autumn, the walk in and the temple courtyards are especially good.
