Yongpyong is Pyeongchang's best-known ski name and one of the places that made the county credible as an Olympic host. In winter, come for slopes rather than sightseeing; outside ski season, the Balwangsan gondola gives a mountain-view reason to stop.
It is still a resort, so keep expectations practical. The reward is not old-town charm, but a clean look at the winter-sport landscape that defines modern Pyeongchang.
