Samcheonpo Bridge

Long cable-stayed bridge across the strait to Changseon Island

The Samcheonpo Bridge — actually a chain of five separate bridges connecting Sacheon to Namhae Island via the smaller islands of Choyang, Neukdo, and Changseon — opened in 2003 and is one of South Korea's more dramatic stretches of coastal road. The longest of the five spans is the cable-stayed Changseon-Samcheonpo Bridge, with two pylons rising 100 metres above the strait.

The route is a destination in itself: scenic pull-offs let you stop for photographs of the bridges from the small headlands. Below the bridge near Choyang Island, the chukjewon — traditional stone fish traps — are still in use, exposed at low tide just as they have been since the Joseon dynasty.
