Colombo Fort Railway Station

The colonial-era hub of Sri Lanka's railway network

Colombo Fort Railway Station is the main railway hub of Sri Lanka and one of the busiest transport nodes in the country. The building itself — a colonial-era station opened in 1908 — is worth a look: the long platforms, the British-era signage, and the general air of controlled chaos characteristic of Asian rail travel. It's also one of the best places in the city to observe the daily rhythms of Sri Lankan life.

The station is a gateway to some of Sri Lanka's most spectacular rail journeys: the hill country line to Kandy and beyond, which climbs through tea plantation country in a journey that is widely considered one of the great train rides of Asia; and the coastal line south to Galle and beyond.
