Colombo traffic is severe, especially during morning and evening rush hours (7–10am, 4–7pm). The city is working on solutions — a new light rail line is planned — but for now, the options are:
Tuk-tuks (three-wheelers): The most practical way to get around. Use PickMe or Uber to avoid being overcharged. Flag fares are metered on app-booked rides; negotiate otherwise. A typical cross-city journey costs 300–600 LKR.
Taxi apps: PickMe is the dominant Sri Lankan ride-hailing app; Uber also operates. Both are reliable and remove the negotiation problem.
City bus: Colombo's bus network is extensive but confusing for newcomers. Routes are numbered; the main corridor runs north-south along Galle Road. Fares are very cheap. Buses are crowded at peak times.
Colombo Commuter Rail: Useful for journeys along the coast (south towards Dehiwala and Ratmalana) or north (Ragama). Trains are infrequent but cheap.
Walking: The Fort and Pettah are walkable, and Galle Face Green to Cinnamon Gardens is an easy walk along Galle Road. Beyond that, distances are too large and traffic too hostile for comfortable walking.
