Pettah Floating Market

Stalls on Beira Lake — street food, handicrafts, and an unusual waterside setting

The Pettah Floating Market occupies 92 stalls along Bastian Mawatha on the northern edge of Beira Lake, with some stalls literally on boats and the rest overhanging the water. It was developed in 2015 on a former industrial canal area and is liveliest in the evenings and on weekends. The stalls sell a mix of street food, handicrafts, and souvenirs — not exclusively floating, and not exclusively Pettah produce, but an enjoyable place to eat street food with water views.

The food is the main draw: grilled corn, isso wade (prawn fritters), roti with coconut sambol, sugar cane juice, and various Sri Lankan sweets. It's more relaxed and less chaotic than the main Pettah bazaar streets a few blocks away.
