Galle International Stadium

Cricket ground fringed on two sides by the Indian Ocean and overlooked by the fort ramparts

The Galle International Stadium is one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world: an open grass field with the fort ramparts rising on one side and the Indian Ocean filling the gap on the other. Test matches and shorter international fixtures are played here several times a year, mostly in early spring and late autumn.

Even on quiet days, you can walk past or stop on the ramparts to watch a domestic match, training session or street game on the pitch — locals turn out daily to play in the shade. During a Test match, fans crowd the ramparts above the ground for the cheapest view in international cricket.

A story
The ground was destroyed by the 2004 tsunami — bodies were laid out on the pitch in the immediate aftermath — and it took three years to rebuild. It re-opened in 2007 and is regarded by many cricketers as the most photogenic test venue in the world.
