Bogambara Prison Site

The former Bogambara Prison occupies a prime position beside the lake, just south of the main city center. The prison closed in 2016 after over a century of use, and the site — roughly six acres of land between the lake and Bogambara stadium — has been a subject of ongoing redevelopment debate. As of writing, the area around the former prison is worth walking past for the views over the lake, and the adjacent Bogambara Stadium occasionally hosts cricket matches open to spectators.

The stadium itself, one of the oldest cricket grounds in Sri Lanka, has hosted international matches and is worth knowing about if cricket is a reason for the visit.

A story
Bogambara Prison closed in 2016 after operating for over a century on some of the most valuable urban land in Kandy. The site — adjacent to the lake, surrounded by views — had been earmarked for redevelopment for decades, but legal challenges and political disputes kept it operating as a prison long after the buildings had deteriorated into what local journalists described as "inhumane conditions." The emptied site has been controversial: proposals have included a sports complex, a cultural centre, and luxury hotels, each drawing fierce public debate about who should benefit from the prime location.
