Getting Around

Tuk-tuks are the main way to get around Kandy. Negotiate the fare before getting in — most journeys within the city centre should cost 150–300 rupees. For longer trips (to Peradeniya, Pinnawela, or the fourteenth-century temples), agree a price for the round trip including waiting time.

The central Kandy area around the lake is walkable, though the hills are steep and the heat can be draining in the afternoon. A daily bus pass covers the main city routes and is useful if you are spending several days in the area. Taxis (metered, bookable via apps like PickMe) are more reliable for fixed-price trips to the airport or out-of-town sites.
