Hindagala Temple sits on a rocky slope near Peradeniya, away from Kandy's main temple circuit. The draw is not scale but age: the cave shelter has inscriptions and fragments of old Buddhist painting, with later Kandyan-period murals layered into the shrine. It is a good stop if you have already seen the Temple of the Tooth and want a quieter look at the religious art of the hill country.
The temple is still active, so dress modestly and expect a simple village-temple atmosphere rather than a polished museum visit. The climb is short but can be hot in the middle of the day. Pair it with the Peradeniya Botanical Garden or the university area rather than making a special cross-city trip.
