Pallekele International Cricket Stadium

The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, about 10 km north of Kandy, is Sri Lanka's most modern cricket venue and one of the most scenically located in the world — the outfield sits in a natural bowl surrounded by the Kandy hills, with the mountains visible over the boundary stands. When a Test or ODI match is scheduled here, tickets are affordable and the atmosphere is outstanding.

Match schedules are available from Sri Lanka Cricket's website. The stadium itself can be visited when no match is on; the groundskeeping and practice facilities are impressive. For cricket-following visitors, timing a Kandy stay around a Pallekele match is straightforwardly worthwhile.

A story
Pallekele was built in time to host matches in the 2011 Cricket World Cup, making it one of the newer Test match venues in the world. The stadium was constructed on the site of a military shooting range, which required significant clearance work. Its first Test match was played in 2011 against England; Sri Lanka won, establishing an early home-ground advantage that the venue has retained in subsequent years.
