Ayurvedic Treatments in Kandy

Several established Ayurvedic clinics and treatment centres operate in and around Kandy, offering everything from basic oil massage (shirodhara, abhyanga) to multi-week Panchakarma detox programmes. The better centres use genuine trained practitioners and compound their own herbal preparations from local plants; the tourist-oriented day spas are more variable in quality.

The Kandyan Arts and Herbal Garden and several clinics near Peradeniya offer day treatments that give a genuine introduction to the system without committing to a week-long programme. For longer treatments, the clinics associated with the Ayurvedic teaching hospitals in and near Kandy are reliable options.

A story
Ayurveda — the traditional Hindu medical system — has been practised in Sri Lanka for over 2,000 years and occupies an unusual position in the country's health system: it is taught at university level, practiced by licensed physicians, and used by the government alongside Western medicine. Sri Lanka has its own variant, Sinhala Ayurveda, which incorporates local medicinal plants not found in the Indian system. The hill country around Kandy is particularly rich in the medicinal herbs used in both traditions.
