Ambasthala Dagaba

Stupa marking the spot where Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa

A small, perfect white dome on the upper terrace, surrounded by a colonnade of stone pillars (the bases of which once supported a wooden roof). The dagaba itself is modest — perhaps four metres tall — but the place is the spiritual heart of Mihintale. Pilgrims circle it clockwise, leaving offerings of white frangipani flowers. The view across to the larger Maha Seya and the Aradhana Gala rock is exceptional.

Shoes off at the entrance to the terrace.

A story
The dagaba is said to stand on the exact spot of Mahinda's famous conversion of King Devanampiyatissa in 247 BC. The chronicle records the test the monk set the king — a riddle about a mango tree — and the round white dome built to mark the meeting carries the meaning of the name *Amba* (mango) *thala* (terrace).
